  • My family and I have been attending Holy Ghost as parishoners for over a year now, and I am very happy here. In the middle of a pretty liberal diocese, this is a parish that is faithful to the Holy See. The beautiful Lourdes-style grotto on the outside brings me great peace; the whole parish is very beautiful and simple. My previous Catholic church was into all sorts of liturgical abuses such that I was very worried about having to explain to my children that their Catholic church was not teaching/acting the Catholic faith. I have no such worries here.

Rose_Worden's experience is most unfortunate and most uncharacteristic of mine. However, my experience in the liturgy was similar when my wife and I were married at my former parish (restrictions on music & decorations, etc.). I believe this a diocese-wide thing, not limited to a single parish. When we learned of these things, we met with the organist and wedding planner and explained to them why some of the restricted items were important to us, and they in turn explained their reasons for the restrictions. We ended up compromising because we were both open minded, and we had a beautiful ceremony because everyone was on the same page. Also, if it helps your understanding on being rushed out of the church, this is somewhat common for Saturday weddings (if that was your case). There is usually a Saturday night mass or confession happening in the afternoon, and the church has to be able to provide that function. Holy Ghost has confessions on Saturday fom 3:45 - 4:45, and an excited wedding party is not the proper backdrop for this sacrament.

I was not at the wedding reviewed here, but the whole thing sounds suspicously like someone was trying to impose their will on the church and the church got defensive. I have seen many young couples that treat the Catholic wedding ceremony as a hindrance and an afterthought; this attitude tends to be irreverent and results in some of the conflict described. Wrong is wrong no matter who commits it, but I would be wary of trusting the tirade below at face value.

  • It is a beautiful church with very welcoming parishioners and priest. The liturgical music is amazing.

I am responding to the last review written by a member of Holy Ghost Church. I am not in the habit of criticizing Catholic Churches. I have had vast experience being involved in liturgies concerning music for funerals, weddings & regular masses, as a choir member of various churches for at over 30 yrs.
I have known many priests, liturgical coordinators, lay people in various parishes & have sung at numerous weddings & dealt with more conservative parishes as well as more modern ones in the Rochester & Buffalo Dioceses.
I HAVE NEVER FELT so unwelcome in a parish EVER. I have never heard of bride & groom treated like Maggie & John were in this day & age. The liturgical coordinator made them feel like they were comiting a SIN for their "MIXED" marriage & made them jump through hoops almost trying to discourage the wedding...YOU WERE NOT THERE & you don't know Maggie & John....AND I DON'T CARE if they had confessions coming up in the latter part of that afternoon...WE WERE TREATED RUDELY & THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR RUDENESS!! When you feel the DOOR ON YOUR BEHIND BECAUSE THEY WANT YOU OUT....THAT IS UNFRIENDLY & RUDE & not a church I ever care to step foot in again.
